Frequently asked questions.

What types of lessons does the Studio offer?

The Studio offers private piano, voice and music theory/history lessons. More instruments will hopefully be added to this list in the future.

What ages and skill levels do you teach?

Piano lessons are offered at levels beginner to advanced to students ages 6 and older with no needed previous experience. Voice lessons are offered at levels beginner to advanced to students 12 years old and up with some previous music lesson experience.

Where are the lessons held?

The studio address is 4928 1st Avenue Edson, Alberta, but will not be fully open until Fall 2023.

What are the Studio rates?

The Studio’s rates are:

  • $32 per 30 minute lesson

  • $48 per 45 minute lesson

  • $64 per 60 minute lesson

Further information on payment options can be found in the Studio Policy on the Registration and Policy page.

How long of lesson is recommended for beginners?

A 30 minute lesson is recommended for beginner students that are learning the fundamentals of the instrument, technique and music theory.

Does the Studio offer group lessons?

The Studio only offers private lessons at this time as it allows the teacher to instruct and support each individual student to become a well-rounded musician. Each lesson is unique and geared specifically to the student’s strengths, weaknesses, and interests. Because of this, we also use a variety of different curriculum and repertoire books depending on the student’s goals.

What are the Studio’s expectations on lesson attendance?

Students are expected to attend each of their weekly lessons throughout the school year. By registering and selecting your time, you are reserving that space in the schedule for the entire year.

What is the Studio’s policy around make-up lessons?

Students may reschedule one lesson per year by providing at least 24-hour notice prior to the start of the originally scheduled lesson time. Once a rescheduled time is agreed upon, it cannot be changed again.  In the situation of unscheduled student absence, there will be no refunds or make-up lessons offered. In the event of a teacher’s absence, the missed lessons will be made up on a date that accommodates both parties’ schedules.

Can I quit lessons partway through the year?

If the student wishes to discontinue lessons permanently, it must be put in writing by the parent or legal guardian and emailed to the studio three weeks prior to the last lesson. The remainder of the money paid to the Studio will be refunded.

How much are students expected to practice?

A regular practice routine is essential to a student’s success. Short but consistent practice sessions are much more effective than a long, but “crammed” practice right before the lesson. It is recommended to practice at least 4 days a week, each session being a minimum of 10-15 minutes for beginners, increasing the time as the student progresses.  Particularly with young children, it is helpful to have the parent’s assistance in establishing the practice routine. Planning to sit with your child as they practice or setting a time (e.g. practicing for 15 minutes right after supper or for 15 minutes right after getting home from school) can be very effective in initiating a consistent practice schedule.

What performance opportunities are available to students?

The studio’s year-end recital will be offered in May. It is an opportunity to share and show off what was learned throughout the year. Exact details will be announced closer to the date. For those interested, there are many other opportunities to perform throughout the school year in Edson and surrounding communities. Performances are not ever mandatory but they are highly supported.
